Soil is a complicated system. Not only the  consistency of nutrition affects the plants absorption, but also the relation between ions. From what we have already known that there are two actions between ions. They are ion antagonism and ion synergism. Firstly, the impact of these two action could only be seen as the relative rather than the decisive. Because it's influence are based on the comparative consistency. If the consistency overtook a certain level, then here comes futher influence, which could be generalized as ion antagonism and ion synergism.

Ion antagonism mainly in refer to one ion affects another ion's functions, such as absorption, transporteration and etc. It mainly occurs between cation+cation or Anion+Anion. For example the resistance between K⁺,Ca²⁺,Mg²⁺ during the growth of bean.When there have K⁺ and Ca ²⁺, the absorption of Mg ²⁺ will be suppressed. However, the suppression will be less when the consistency of Ca ²⁺ is lower. Therefore, we could see that the ion antagonism mostly could be not good for the growth.

Ion synergism on the opposite is mainly good for the absorption of nutrients because of the existence of ion will promote the efficiency of another ion. With this performance, we always wish to see the ion synergism rather than antagonism. Not only will it benefits the plantation for growth, but also a cost saving for economic agronomy. The ion synergism takes place when Cation+Anion or Cation+ Cation. It is easily to undersand the Cation+Anion. However, when Cation+Cation, there still is synergism. A renowned one is The Viet's effect. According to Viet's effect, the existence of Ca ²⁺, Mg ²⁺, Al ³⁺ in solution could promote the absorption of K⁺, Rb⁺ and Br^-. Furthremore, Ca ²⁺ promote the absorption of K⁺, Rb⁺ and Br^-, but the promotion stops when Ca ²⁺ in roots.Therefore, Ca ²⁺ affects the plasma membrane rather than metabolism. All in all, the ion syenrgism generally is good for the growth of plantations.

Regardless the positive impact or negative impact, we could get a conclusion that the ion exchange in the soil could affect the growth. That's why we use many methods to adjust the Organic matters, PH and etc in the soil. Not only because it is the medium for ion exchange, moreover, it is the fundation for growth!
